Hearing Loss: Say what?

Boy did this subject strike a lot of nerves. By far the responses to this subject outnumbered anything I have received in the past. There were too many individuals writing in to name them all so let me condense the responses without credits.

First and foremost is that most responses indicated that IT IS possible to get hearing aids from the VA. The process seems to vary, depending on the local VA, and in a lot of the cases it took an appeal to the original refusal to finally get results. So – if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. There seems to be a pattern of the VA turning down the first request.

In several of the cases bringing the results of a civilian audio test to the VA at the initial interview seemed to have helped. This is what I will do when I go. Don’t forget to bring along your DD-214 and Honorable Discharge.

There were a several groups mentioned for being able to assist you if you are turned down by the VA. First would be your local Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans who can help you in working up the appeal. You do not have to be a member of the DAV to get this assistance. Another source of help and information would be the National Veterans Health Benefits Service Center at 1-877-222-8387. You can also contact your nearest Chapter of the American Legion for help with your appeal.

There may be some minor costs associated with getting hearing aids from the VA. One of our members said that he brought in his civilian audio test and within four visits to the VA, at a cost of $50 per visit, got his hearing aids and a lifetime supply of batteries. Another member wrote that as of 2003 there was an income limit of $30,000 to get VA assistance.

If all else fails and you have to resort to civilian hearing aids, one suggestion was to go to COSTCO where the Bernafon brand costs about $1299 each rather that a more common $3000.
