ASMN

The Mole: In last month’s newsletter we referred to the Wikipedia article on the Army Security Agency and the mention of NSA personnel working at some of the Field Stations. We also mentioned, with tongue-in-cheek, that we would “out” the person we though was assigned to Field Station 8608 in Scheyern in the mid-50’s.

In order to protect the guilty, we will only refer to this individual as “Aggi” although he also was know by a more derogatory nickname related to his ancestry. Aggi is no longer with us as he is now intercepting in that big Field Station in the sky.

Aggi came to Scheyern under very suspicious circumstances – thus the conclusion that he was the NSA Mole.

There are several variations of this story but since I am the Editor, I’ll use the one that I am most familiar with. It seems that Aggi was stationed in Asmara before coming to Scheyern. The story goes that Aggi had been banned from the NCO Club for some reason, probably his excessive drinking. When his suspension was up, the club was about to hold its annual NCO/Officers dance. In retribution Aggi went into town and picked up the biggest, fattest, “lady-of-the night” he could find to be his guest for that evening. Needless to say this went over like a you know what in church and within 72 hours Aggi was on his way out of Asmara.

We have never been able to verify this story with any of the Asmara guys but it sure does make one heck of a good cover story, if true. Even given Aggi’s propensity for alcohol, he was the best damned search operator I ever had on my trick. Drunk or sober Aggi could copy the weakest signals and strong signals five groups behind.

Well that’s the story of the NSA Scheyern Mole guys, now it’s your turn.

I doubt that any of the Comm. Recon’s had NSA personnel assigned to them but there are still Field Station 8606 in Herzo and Field Station 8611 in Baumholder to be heard from. If you guys can’t come up with a story as good as this last one, you were probably drinking tea and coffee instead of bier and cognac on your off shifts.

Darrell Parish (Herzo) provided us with a link to the Herzogenaurach town museum about the history of Herzo base. Darrell say’s it’s a great site with lots of photographs. The site is located at: http://www.nbg-mil-com.de/Herzo/he.html.

Carl Beduhn (Baumholder 56-58) is off to the Baumholder reunion in Seattle scheduled for September 21-26. We’ll let you know if Carl gives us a rundown on the reunion. To bad they didn’t schedule it with the Alpiners here in Saint Louis.

Denis Byrne (British DF Detachment at Hoeglin – 69) is still looking for Mike Lea/Leah who was stationed in Bad Aibling during the late 60’s. Mike lived in the BSQ and drove a green VW Beetle. You can contact Denny by e-mail at denis.byrne@hotmail.co.uk.
