REUNION XIX: After Action Report.

Even though the Thursday check-in day greeted us with a few isolated – but heavy – thunder showers, the Hospitality Room offered us a chance to meet and greet our fellow attendees. We had representation from twenty states and ten European ASA sites. Dinner that evening was of the individual’s choice but most of us opted for The Pub Lounge within the Landmark Resort. This gave me, personally, a chance to greet my old Scheyern CO Quentin Zell (Heilbronn/Scheyern 52-55) and his wife Dottie.

Friday was our first full reunion day with many of the attendees visiting the local attractions and again heavy use of the Hospitality Room and the Jägermeister. Dinner that evening was held in the hotel featuring our usual Bavarian Theme. Dave Wooden (Scheyern/Munich/Straubing 47-48) came decked out in this full regalia Lederhosen while Gabrielle Atkinson (Ted Atkinson Scheyern/Memmingen 53-55) and Eda Thadeus (Ralph Thadeus – Scheyern 53-56) wore their Dirndl. Ralph came dressed in his St. Louis Schützenverein uniform less the rifle. It was an evening filled with good companions, good conversation and good food.

Saturday was again a day to explore the local attractions, walk the beach, pick up sea shells, try out the various pools and hot tubs the Landmark had to offer, and, of course, heavy use of the Hospitality Room. Cocktail Hour-and-a-half (pun intended) preceded our business and dinner meeting.

Jim Natividad (Scheyern 47-54) opened the meeting by greeting the attendees and followed that with a moment of silence for our departed members. Ralph Thadeus reviewed the financial status of the reunion group which is in very good shape through the generosity of our Supporting Members. The next order of business was the election of officers. Jim opened the floor for nominations which was greeted with a thundering round of silence. So, as usual, by acclimation, Jim Natividad was re-elected as President, Ray Lash (Scheyern 53-57) was re-elected as Vice President and Ralph Thadeus was re-elected as Secretary/Treasurer, Editor of
The Interceptor and Gate-keeper of the web site.

The final piece of business conducted was the selection of the next reunion site for 2011. The Board members have been getting some pretty heavy comments about having the next reunion on the West Coast. The last one there was Reno in 1999. So, last year several of our Left Coast members were asked if they wanted to host the reunion. We want to thank Duane Vincent (Bad Aibling 62-64) and Donovan Craig (Bad Aibling 63-65) for their efforts, but, by acclimation, LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, will be our 2011 reunion site with the tentative dates of October 27-29. The on-site coordinator will be our Vice-President, Ray Lash.

The evening and formal ending of the reunion ended all to soon, with lots of hugs going around and promises to see each other again next year. So there it is folks, start saving you $’s and plan on attending the 2011 reunion. And remember, Vegas has a sanctioned Hofbräuhaus which will probably be the site of our reunion’s Bavarian Evening. You can check them out at http://www.hofbrauhauslasvegas.com.

And, last but not least, keep checking out our web site for pictures from the 2010 Myrtle Beach reunion.

NE Ohio ASAers – As most of you know I recently moved from St. Louis to the Greater Cleveland Ohio area. Never one to pass up the opportunity to meet and greet, I’ve decided to form a social group of ASAers living in the Greater Cleveland area. I have the names and snail-mail addresses of nine Alpiners who live in the area and have already contacted them by e-mail to see if they are interested in such a group. If you live in the Greater Cleveland area, did NOT receive my e-mail and are interested in joining such a group, give me a call at (((440/316/7124))). This group will include ALL former ASAers in the area regardless of Theaters of Operation. It will also be advertised in the local newspapers.

Bill Carpenter (Scheyern 52-54) took us up on our suggestion to send along some memories of your ASA time in Europe. Bill writes: “I was at Scheyern from '52 - '54. At one point I drove the pass bus from the base to Pfaffenhofen. At that time, Jim Natividad was the NCO in charge of the motor pool. He was quite a guy. I remember one day that I parked the bus up by the barracks to go to my room for something, and while I was gone the bus somehow began to roll down toward the motor pool. It smashed through the doors of the motor pool. Cpl. Natividad was really ticked. I was taken off bus driving and given another job.

Another time several of us guys went to the gasthaus where Sonny (Asian guy), and his wife owned the place. Sonny had two huge dogs in a fenced-off area at the back of the building. I got really smashed and somehow got up into the attic and kicked the roof out just above where the dogs were. We had quite a time getting me down off the roof without the dogs getting me. This is just two of the instances I had during the two years I was at Scheyern. I really enjoyed being there. Several of the guys often wondered what would happen to a guy like me who drank so much while at Scheyern. Well, when I got out of the army in '54, I went back to college and later became a minister, pastoring churches for 48 years until retirement.

Tell Jim Natividad hi for me when you go to the reunion. Surely wish I could be there.”

Editor: I passed this along to Jim Natividad before publication and here is what Jim had to say:

“I remember the instance with Bill Carpenter and the bus. Frank Morris wanted to put him in jail, but Harry Shultz and Massa in Utilities came to the rescue with doors that, when repaired, looked like new. Just one more memory of a lot that I have of Scheyern. Thanks for sharing.”

Editor: The Gasthaus that Bill refers to was Furtmeiers and was owned by Zenta Furtmeier but known to us as Cynthia. Sonny was her boyfriend. Drank many a Mampi there – “Mampi Cognac ja Mampi Cognac warum bist du böse auf mich”

Following up on the passing of the Intelligence torch, Alan MacQuoid (Salzburg 54-55) tells us that his son, Naval Reserve Commander Alan MacQuoid, Jr. is currently commanding a unit at the Navy Network Warfare Command. His next assignment will be at the newly reconstituted TENTH FLEET at Ft. George Meade. During World War II, the Navy stood up the TENTH FLEET to combat the U-Boat threat. Recently, the Chief of Naval Operations directed the re-establishment of the TENTH FLEET to combat the cyber threat and to act as the Navy’s component to the new USCYBERCOM, an affiliate of NSA.
