ASMNWe’re moving! Over the past several years Eda and I have seriously considered moving back to the Cleveland, Ohio, area. Cleveland is where Eda and I got married and where most of the Thadeus clan resides. Our move to St. Louis, those many years ago, was for business reasons. We have enjoyed our life here in the “gateway to the West” but the love of family calls. As many of you know, Eda and I were not fortunate enough to have children, so our many nieces and nephews are our family. Also, since I am now the patriarch of the Thadeus clan, our nieces and nephews have been putting on the pressure to move back home. So, if all goes as planned, we will close on the sale of our house here in St. Louis on my 80th birthday, May 25th, and relocate to North Ridgeville, Ohio. I am not sure what the publication schedule of the next newsletter will be. Publish early, publish late, or not publish at all? – That will all depend on how deep I am in alligators. Bear with me, the Interceptor will continue. If necessary, after the 25th, you can reach us on our cell phone at (314-448-0549) Times change. One of the ASA reunion groups with which we are in contact is the ASA Alumni Association National Capitol Region. For many years now they have been publishing a printed edition of their newsletter. Well time, technology and finances have finally caught up with them and they are now depending on the Internet for their communication medium. So, now, with the passing of his wife Eve, Len Fisher will divert part of his efforts to the new web site. Give them a look at http://www.asaaancr.org. Tom Steel (Bad Aibling 57-60) adds the following regarding Lebanon and Col. Swears: “I remember when folks got shipped out to Lebanon. We lost SP4 Christ from "G" Branch to that assignment. Even though he was a 983 (IBM Operator) he had a secondary MOS of Clerk typist so they sent him along as the company clerk. They all flew to Turkey but came back by boat into Bremerhaven since the CO got airsick (so they say) and refused to fly. Another thing Christ reported was almost everyone in the company had more equipment than they knew what to do with since supply people would divide everything equally between the Air Force and Army. The Marines I'm told would steal into the ASA compound and liberate supplies they needed. When our folks returned everyone in the unit had been given sets of new Army Greens at the time. (Remember, some of us still had brown shoes too.) Some of the folks in the radio and crypto repair would come down to "G" Branch and have coffee during the mid shift with us while they were working their 16 hour shift. Col. Swears was a great Officer who I had the opportunity to work with later at NSA. He always held his troops in highest regard and was proud of his duty at BA. TAPS
CABLE, John Mark, age 81, of Alcoa, Tennessee, passed away peacefully March 19, 2010 in Gaithersburg, MD with his loving sister, Joan Bell at his side. He was a kind, generous and chivalrous soul his entire life. A career serviceman who worked as a military attaché in many US embassies abroad, he and his wife, Margaret had no children of their own but lavishly entertained many friends and extended family members in exotic posts over the years. After retiring from the Army, the Cables moved to Tucson, where they met many new friends and he enjoyed a second career at the Tucson International Airport. He is survived by his sisters, Joan (Jody) Bell of Gaithersburg, MD and Voyce Marcelle (Marcie) Presley of Lake City, FL and loving nieces and nephews and their children. John and your Editor, Ralph Thadeus, were room mates in Scheyern where we were both Trick Chiefs. John hosted the engagement party for Eda and me at the old Bar Charlie. That’s John hoisting the Semmel tray in the above picture. Speaking of Bar Charlie, John beat me out for the job of Club Steward. Either I was a better Op than John or he was a better drinker than me. God bless you John and chug a Mampi for me for old time’s sake. Both Bob Barr and I had lost track of John but we figured out that the reason for this was, probably, that after the death of his wife Margaret, John had moved from Tucson, back South, to be near his sister Joan. James “Jim” Roger Seim (Herzo 67-70) passed away on March 26, 2010, as reported by Peter Strauss (Salzburg 53-54). Seim was a 38 year veteran of the San Francisco Police Department and was involved in amateur radio operations.
