Dennis Kirstein (Rothwesten 69-71) is retired military now living in Knickhagen, just below Rothwesten, and is teaching JROTC at Würzburg High School.  Dennis retired from the military in 1975 and built his home in Knickhagen.

The German Army has been located at Rothwesten since 1975 but will be closing the post, for good, at the end of November.

Dennis is working with the Mayor of Rothwesten to put together a museum of the post.  They want to cover three eras: Pre-US, US and Post-US.  If anyone would like to send or donate pictures, stories, equipment or other Rothwesten memorabilia, you can contact Dennis by e-mail at:  dennis.kirstein2@eu.dodea.edu.

Dick (Richard J.) Finnick (Wels 54-55) and his wife Barb celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary this past September.  Dick claims that he is still able to take nourishment and sit up straight which are pretty good things as we Cold Warriors grow older.  He sends his regards to Joe and Millie Strock, one of our biggest supporters.

James A. Smith (Heilbronn 55-58) adds that the ASA crest was worn by the 502/507 CRB’s at Bandnerhof in Heilbronn during his time frame.  He got his in Devens and still has them.  But, conversely, Duane Vincent (Bad Aibling 62-64) says that it was NOT worn at BA when he was there

Bad%20Aibling%20Kaseren.JPGLeave it to the Brits to keep us in line with the use of the “Kings English.”  It seems that no matter how many times I ran last month’s newsletter through spell check and grammatic, I still blew the translation of what the German heart said.  Thanks to Denis Byrne  (British DF Detachment at Hoegling/Bad Aibling - 69) the correct translation would be Marry Me not Merry Me.

And late word is that Denny is closing in on locating one of his old BA Ami friends, Mike Lee.

Denny also included this snapshot of the Bad Aibling gate.

It seems that Halloween has caught on in Germany.  News reports say that Germans will spend 150 million Euros on candy, costumes and items to give grandma a fright, and that the trend is rising.  A spokesman for the German sweets industry says that Halloween is now the third-most important event after Christmas and Easter.

While Fasching is still mostly celebrated in Bavaria, Halloween seems to be catching on all over Germany.

Got a heads-up from Bob Vacek (Bad Aibling 62-65) that our web site was down in mid-November.  A quick call to our provider rectified the situation.  Bob and his wife Ann have relocated from Dover, PA to Nashville, TN.  Bob and Ann, along with their fellow BAer Basil Yankolopous and his wife Bunny, send greetings to all their old BA buddies.

The Army Historical Foundation, Inc. “a non-profit tax-exempt organization dedicated to the preservation of the history of the American soldier” is seeking donations.  Located in Arlington, VA, they have various donation levels: Member, Sustaining Member, Charter Member and Life Memberships at $25, $50, $100 and $1500 respectively.  You can get more information about the organization from their web site at:  http://www.armyhistory.org.

Just ran across this picture in my old files.  It is a field picture of the German Army, during World War 2, using the Enigma encryption machine.

Joseph P. McNally (116th SRIC – WW2):  Joe’s E-newsletter bounced so we did a Google search and found the following.  All data checks with what we know about Joe so here is what we gleaned from the North County Times in California:  At the age of 83, Joe passed away on Sunday, April 2, 2006 at his home.

Joe is survived by his wife, Lois McNally; daughters Pat, Nancy and Marilee; sister, Lola Otto; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Joe joined the 116th SRIC in 1944 as a driver and courier.  He played softball for the motor section and, in later life, played senior softball in California.
