Hearing Loss: Alan Barchelder (Scheyern 54-56) writes: I am interested in learning who among our select body of Intercept veterans has been successful in getting the VA to acknowledge duty-related hearing loss resulting from lightning strikes to the antenna field, and thus receive hearing aid care? Anybody?

With the cost of hearing aids that are tuned to the hight-frequendcy loss now pushing $3,000 PER EAR, VA help would be help indeed. I doubt that I can document the need other than to report that upon release from the Army in January 1956 I was denied employment by the Santa Fe Railroad because of impaired hearing. They told me that my hearing loss was severe to the degree that I could not hear rolling stock in the rail yard and was a high risk for disabling or fatal injury as all railroad employees—regardless of their eventual duties—were required to begin employment by working in the yards, their equivalent of Basic Training.”

Editor: This strikes close to home. I recently had a hearing test with the results that I am starting to have a hearing loss. After talking to the Audiologist and the doctor and after explaining what I did in the service, they seemed to think that the constant abuse of the ear drums was the probable cause of the hearing loss. I have not gone to the VA yet but I agree with Alan, this can be a costly thing. So – if you were CW, non-Morse, voice intercept or DF operator, and are having some hearing loss, it can’t hurt to contact the VA and explain how your job could have been responsible for your hearing loss.

Myrtle Beach Oktoberfest: Supporting member Donald L. (Don) Shipman (Bad Aibling/ Heilbronn/Coburg/Bamberg 52-54) wrote to advise those of you attending the reunion that Myrtle Beach is having an Oktoberfest celebration on October 9th and you might want to consider coming in early to enjoy the fun. Don also said that the normal ocean temperature is above 80º this time of the year.
