The ASA Alpiners history project of the 116th Signal Radio Intelligence Company (SRIC), during World War II, is just about completed.  The test product is now on our web site and with a little tweaking will be done.

For those of you that are not aware of it, there were two World War II SIGNINT units that remained as part of the Occupation Forces in Germany: the 114th SRIC stationed in Herzo, and the 116th SRIC stationed in Scheyern.

In the fall of 1945 the officers and men of the 116th SRIC commissioned a printed book detailing their history from Camp Crowder, Missouri, to Scheyern, Germany.  The book not only contains the narrative of the unit but also many pictures taken along the way.   Because of the size of the original book (about 130 pages) our web master has broken the product into five sections to make the downloading easier.  Be aware that the download time with a dial-up connection will be about 10-15 minutes per section.  Save a copy of each downloaded section on your hard drive to make secondary downloads quicker.

The project was funded by the generous contributions of Oscar Loveless, Jules Weinberg and Ralph M. Wilk, veterans of the 116th Signal Radio Intelligence Company, with additional funding by the Supporting Members of the Army Security Agency Alpiners Reunion Group.

Special thanks go to Col. Quentin L. Zell, former Commanding Officer of Field Station 8608 AAU/DU (Scheyern) whose original book, given to your Editor, started this project.  Thanks also to Ralph M. Wilk and Jules Weinberg, 116th SRIC veterans, who loaned me their copies of the original book so we could provide the highest quality product for display on our web site.

In case you Chicago area ASAers missed it, the famous Berghoff German restaurant is closing after 107 years of operation.  I had hoped that one of our reunions would be held in Chicago so we could hold our Bavarian Evening at the Berghoff but, sadly, it is not to be.  The Berghoff will close on February 28th.

OK you West Coast ASAers, let's get a little more response to the idea of a West Coast mini-reunion.  About five of you expressed interest in such an event but none of the responders volunteered to host the mini-reunion.  Because of heavy December schedules I imagine some of you are waiting to respond.  Now is the time to let me know if there is enough interest to continue.

Veterans of FS 8605 (Helemano, Hawaii) are holding their reunion from May 4-7, 2006, in Tucson, AZ so you interested parties might want too piggyback on their reunion.
